Character matters

To the editor:

As per merriam-webster.com, the definition of character- moral excellence/firmness. The definition of “integrity” — firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values: incorruptible.

In this instance a 50-year guarantee of freedom for women to control their reproductive rights, as well as their medical privacy was stripped away. This is one, example.

Consider the right to vote. In 2022, 39 states have considered at least 393 bills that make it harder for voters to register, stay on the rolls or vote (SPLC Report). According to the Brennan Center for Justice, 18 states have passed 34 voter suppression laws.

Consider Social Security and Medicare, ideas floated by some in the GOP involve sun setting. The nonpartisan congressional Research Service says, “The sunset concept provides for programs and agencies to terminate automatically on a periodic basis unless explicitly renewed by law.” (AARP Press Room)

The GOP is working to take your rights. They have succeeded with Roe v Wade; they support redistricting your right to vote and voting annually for your Social Security and Medicare benefits. Do you value candidates with character and integrity?

Jean Lapper is the state’s 45th Senate District candidate, and Matt Castelli is New York’s 21st Congressional District 21 candidate. They will support your rights. Early voting is Oct. 29 to Nov. 6, and Election Day is Nov. 8.
