LP Community Day committee finds new ways to celebrate volunteers

To the editor:

It is with great sadness that we announce that Lake Placid Community Day, like so many other events, will be put on pause for 2020. This event is by the community and for the community, and we feel that the health and safety of our community must be first and foremost.

Along with this, we have decided to honor our volunteers in a different way this year. We will not be honoring one adult and one youth Distinguished Volunteer of the Year as we have in the past.

Don’t worry, though, we put on our thinking caps, got creative and are happy to introduce the Community Spotlight, a twice-a-month feature on our Facebook page, Lake Placid Community Day Picnic and Party, #lpcommunityday. Each Community Spotlight will feature a local organization allowing them to honor their own volunteers, highlight what they do as a group, or maybe a little of both. We have already posted our first Spotlight, so be sure to check it out. We are starting with organizations that have either participated in the past or were already signed up for this year and will move on from there. If you are interested in Spotlighting your organization, please contact Jill at jillcardinale@thepinesoflakeplacid.com.

On a related note, we have also made a change to one of our Distinguished Volunteer of the Year traditions. Instead of planting a tree each year, we have transitioned to a perennial garden. It took us a little longer than expected, but we are happy to report that the garden has been planted. A plaque will be included in the garden listing all past and future recipients, but this garden is dedicated to all of our community volunteers. Special thanks to Jill Cardinale Segger, Denise Bujold, Macie Huwiler and Karen Armstrong for their hard work weeding and planting. Additional thanks to the village of Lake Placid for allowing us to use this beautiful location, Cherise Bixler and Lake Placid Beautification for help with the plants, and extra special thanks to Annoel Krider for her beautiful garden design.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Lake Placid Community Day 2021!

Sincerely,

Valerie Abraham-Rogers
