We don’t say it enough, but in New York’s Adirondack Park — particularly in the Olympic Region — we’re extremely lucky to have an abundance of family-friendly activities and venues, and this past winter didn’t disappoint.

Moreover, we’re lucky to have many dedicated small business owners, government employees and recreation managers to take care of the roads and sidewalks, trails, tourist facilities, etc. They work hard in the coldest and snowiest conditions every winter. Hats off to each and every person who makes our communities run.

Whether it’s skating, skiing, snowshoeing, ice climbing, snowmobiling or sledding, we’ve made many memories with friends and family this winter. Skiers have enjoyed trails at the new Scotts Cobble at Craig Wood Golf Course, Cascade Welcome Center, Mount Van Hoevenberg, Whiteface Mountain, Adirondak Loj, High Peaks Wilderness Area and Jackrabbit Trail. The multi-use Adirondack Rail Trail between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake was well used by fat bike riders, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers. Olympic venues hosted skiers, skaters, hockey players and spectators for many sporting events.

Mirror Lake was full of activity with skating, hockey and dogsledding. And although the Lake Placid Toboggan Chute had a short season due to unseasonably warm weather, workers at the North Eba Park District went above and beyond to keep the popular attraction open as much as possible. They even plowed a skating path around the lake.

The biggest memory made in Lake Placid this past winter was the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games, which was great fun hosting thousands of athletes, coaches, delegates and visitors. Congrats to the games’ organizers at the Adirondack Sports Council, the thousands of volunteers, employees at the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, venue operators, local businesses and a variety of security teams for being such gracious hosts.

Now, let’s see what spring brings.
