Children on the other hand, should also be mindful of motorists and the inherent dangers of walking, biking or skateboarding along the roadway.

It’s easy to forget during our morning and afternoon commutes that back to school means more children out and about. So everyone, please be safe.

Back to school is also an opportunity to focus on the value of educational experiences. One such opportunity will present itself this weekend with “The Adirondacks: A Place to Dream” arts festival taking place this weekend in Lake Placid. (see story on page 1). It’s not only a great chance for local children to learn more about their Adirondack heritage and history along with gaining a greater appreciation for the arts and humanities, but it’s also free.

So why not check the schedule on page 8 and go to one or more of the programs.

And while on the topic of learning opportunities, last school year brought with it a plethora of controversy. But even controversial issues provide students with educational opportunities.

As the school year progresses, parents and faculty members should pay attention to the issues and instead of ranting and raving, use the classroom and/or dinner table as an open forum for learning. Discuss the issues faced by the school district, whether personnel or budgetary issues, as what takes place within the school district is a microcosm or what takes place in the world.

Throughout the year, learning opportunities will present themselves. It is the duty of parents and school to recognize such opportunities and utilize them to the advantage of the students.

Let’s all make this a positive year of learning – and learning begins at home.
