LIBRARY NEWS: AARP volunteer tax help begins at Lake Placid Public Library

The Lake Placid Public Library offers support for many new years’ needs, including tax preparation, wellness programming and new titles to support skill building.

Tai Chi Flow for seniors

Held every Thursday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in January and February, enjoy practicing a form of tai chi that combines gentle stretching and slow, circular movements to improve flexibility, balance and strength while easing stress and anxiety. Presented by Mary Bartel, structural yogatherapist, tai chi fow and meditation Instructor. No RSVP required. A free program open to all seniors.

AARP tax preparation

The AARP tax aide volunteers will be available again this year from Feb. 2 to mid-March to provide free tax service. Anyone wishing to sign up for an appointment may call the library at 518-523-3200 to add your name to the list. Volunteers began returning calls and setting up appointments starting on Monday, Jan. 26. This service is completely free and open to taxpayers of all ages; AARP membership is not required.

Local author presentation

Sarah van Rijsewijk of Lewis, joins us from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 to share about writing her new children’s book, “Santa and the Sled Dogs.” This program is offered as part of our ongoing homeschool Thursday morning events, but all are welcome!. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

After Hours: Stargazing

Join special guest, Simon Thill, from the Adirondack Sky Center in Tupper Lake for a stargazing event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24. Come to the library after dark to learn to use telescopes and binoculars and record what we can see.

– Early Bird Craft Socials: Last Wednesday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m.

– Tai Chi Flow: Every Thursday in January and February from 11:15 to 12:15 p.m.

– Homeschool Thursday: First Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

– LEGO Club: Last Thursday of each month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

– Story Time: Every Friday from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Art exhibit

The “Seasons” photography exhibit is now showing in the library’s Hughes Art Gallery. Julie R. Chrisman, Lake Placid resident, has been doing photography for 40 years and owned her own business in New Jersey. Her current exhibit explores the beauty of the Adirondacks during the different seasons of the year.

New books

– New fiction and nonfiction titles are listed on our website at www.lakeplacidlibrary.org.

– New travel books are available to plan your next vacation.

– The business and accounting collection has been updated for small business owners and nonprofit managers.

– The cookbook collection has been expanded, including options for medically tailored diets.

Computer service updates

– WiFi printing and scanning is now available from any device. Ask any staff member for assistance.

– Printing and copying now include color (.25/page) as well as black and white (.10/page).

– All computers have been updated and include word and a PDF reader.

– IT Librarian Josh Allen is available to assist with computer and phone use from Tuesday to Saturday. Please make an appointment for more thorough one-on-one instruction by emailing joshallen@lakeplacidlibrary.org.

Upcoming closure

The library will be closed on Feb. 16 for fa ederal holiday.
