Golf course opens
–
The official opening of Lake Placid’s new country club was auspicious in every respect. The crowd was good and in good humor, and the golf course was wonderful considering that only 10 weeks ago no work on it had been done. Of course, there is much room for improvement on both greens and fairways, but for a new course, it is exceptionally good.
The tournament was played off as a kickers’ handicap — each player choosing his own handicap. After the playing, the lucky number was drawn by lot. Among the men, Robert Isham and Dick Tyrell tied on the lucky 85. They will play the tie off from scratch soon. Then the winner’s name is to be inscribed on the President’s Cup offered by Seymour Dunn. If the possession of the cup had gone strictly on merits, Frank Swift, with the lowest score of 91, would have won it.
Earlier in the ceremonial opening, Seymour Dunn drove the first ball from the first tee, and Mrs. Rabineau was there to photograph the track of the ball.

Skunks in car
–
The Gouverneur paper relates certain complications that followed the parking of a Buick car in front of an ice cream establishment in that place some 10 days ago. When the owner, Carl Brown, returned from work, he was stricken by the almost over-powering odors emanating from his car. An investigation disclosed the fact that someone had deposited a bag containing six small skunks in the auto.
The car owner immediately started to find the person who had placed the little animals in his car and it developed that another employee of the company, Joe Gates, had returned Saturday after a trip to Pyrites and encountered seven of the little fellows in the road, one of which was killed by the truck.
He gathered the remaining six in a bag and upon his return showed them to the proprietor of the plant. He was advised to let them go, as it was against the law to have them in possession at this time of year.
Instead of releasing them, Gates placed the bag in Brown’s car, and all would have gone well, no doubt, except that a number of children began playing around the machine and disturbed the young skunks.

Flag etiquette
–
School children of Essex County and every county in the state are to be given instruction in its significance and the military regulations concerning its proper recognition.
During the recent session of the Legislature, a law was passed, signed by Gov. Smith, amending the education law by prescribing that such instruction shall be given in public schools beginning in the fall.

Trooper at bridge
–
At the request of North Elba Supervisor Willis Wells, a trooper has been stationed at the first bridge across the AuSable River on the road to Wilmington where a new steel structure will soon be erected. The purpose is to compel drivers of autos, which are numerous in the Adirondacks just now, to use due caution in crossing while work is in progress.
The central abutment of the new bridge is now being poured.
