Ironman Lake Placid
–
Ironman is here and it’s here to stay, according to Ironman President Graham Fraser, who announced Tuesday, July 27 that the headquarters for United States events will be permanently located in Lake Placid.
This means that Ironman USA officials have designated Lake Placid as the main office responsible for coordinating the three U.S. triathlons.
These triathlons will be Ironman Florida (beginning in November), Ironman California (beginning in May) and Ironman Lake Placid (beginning in August).
The Lake Placid office will also be responsible for coordinating Ironman Canada, which takes place in British Columbia, about two weeks before the Lake Placid event.
Each of these separate locations will have their own office, but the organization will flow out of Lake Placid to these places.
The Hawaiian Ironman World Championship, however, will still keep its headquarters in Florida.

Jim Goodwin trail
–
On Tuesday, Aug. 3, the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society will formally dedicate the newly constructed trail to Rooster Comb Mountain in Keene Valley.
The trail will be named in honor of Jim Goodwin, who for more than 70 years, has been instrumental in developing and maintaining area trails. A summer resident of Keene Valley since 1919, Goodwin guided his first party up Mount Marcy in 1922 and later cut several informal local trails, including one up Porter Mountain from Interbrook Road.
A school teacher by profession, Goodwin devoted most of his summers to guiding and trail maintenance and is responsible for constructing many currently popular trails, including Big Slide via the Brothers, the Ridge (now Zander Scott) Trail to Giant and the Weld Trail to Gothics via Pyramid.

Train station
–
The Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society has applied for a Federal Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century grant. The state Department of Transportation has received the request for $422,000 to rebuild the railroad station.
One of the primary obligations is to restore the roof of the station to its original condition. The station was constructed in 1903-04 by the Delaware and Hudson Railroad Company.
Rebuilding outdoor canopies on both sides of the train station is another major project. Having the canopies provides shelter for train passengers, which gives the historical society more space inside for exhibits. The third purpose of the grant is for the general upgrade of the facility. This includes making sure that the electrical and plumbing conditions comply with building codes.
The historical society is in charge of repairing the building. The equipment repair will be handled by the Adirondack Railway Preservation Society, which is planning to operate an excursion from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake. The tracks will be worked on by the state DOT. The excursion trip is expected to be running by this time next year.
The upgrade, if approved, is set to take place in the fall of 2000.
