The Lake Placid Public Library has been inundated with visitors from all over the country and the world due to the bustling activity in the area. It is an amazing place to meet a diverse range of intriguing people.

The busy summer calendar is filled with programs for people of all ages and interests. Visit the library’s website — lakeplacidlibrary.org — to find all the programs’ dates and times or call us at 518-523-3200 and we can sign you up for any that interest you.

On Friday, June 28, the celebration for Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday took place from 3 to 5 p.m. at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site. Many friends gathered around Smokey Bear to participate in the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge, take the Smokey Bear Pledge and earn environmental education badges. The event was joined by the Lake Placid Public Library, the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department, Mountain Lake PBS, Cornell University’s Uihlein Maple Research Forest, Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute and the Adirondack Mountain Club. Participants could read books, earn badges, explore outdoors and receive prizes.

On Monday, July 8, our resident artist, Erin Johnson, held a watercolor class on painting summer wreaths. This was followed by Tuesday’s children’s program, “Sing a Story, Read a Song,” with Nan Hoffman. On Friday, July 12, Ms. Linda’s Story time featured entertainment by RiverJack Z. Many young children and families enjoyed the music and dancing.

During this past week, there was a group activity called “Painting in the Garden” with Erin, followed by a children’s program called “Who’s That?” — which included a visit from the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum with live animals.

What an amazing summer!
