After a busy January, we welcome you to February. The FISU games are concluded, Main Street is back open to traffic, and the Lake Placid Public Library is back to its regular hours of operation, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on saturday.

AARP tax help

We are fortunate to have the AARP volunteers preparing taxes again this year. Scheduling appointments is underway with an expected busy six weeks ahead. This service is completely free, with no age or income requirements.

If anyone wishes to make an appointment call the library at 518-523-3200 and leave your name and phone number. An AARP representative will return your call to schedule an appointment, explaining what documents are required. The volunteers’ final day at the library will be March 15.

Children’s programming

We are thrilled to remind friends that Kate Messner’s “Over and Under the Snow” StoryWalk is still located on the cross-country ski trails at the Cascade Welcome Center. Many skiing enthusiasts have already taken advantage of Kate’s descriptive text and Christopher Silas Neal’s distinctive artwork. “Over and Under the Snow” is a book for all ages, helping both young and old slow down (even on skis) to observe, wonder and learn about nature that’s, literally, under our feet.

During the month of January, with the FISU games taking place, the Mac-Pac school camp (K-2) visited the library on two separate days. Each day, the about 60 children participated in a story and a hands-on activity.

On Tuesday, Jan. 31 the library hosted a virtual author visit with Grace Lin and Kate Messner for “Once Upon a Book.” This was a sneak preview read-aloud excerpt from their new picture book that celebrates the transformative power of stories. They also shared the story behind their collaboration and invited young readers to use their own imaginations, writing in response to art. The session wrapped up with time for live Q&A.

The newest StoryWalk on Main Street is now ready for everyone to enjoy. “Go Sled! Go!” by James Yang is the story posted in Main Street windows. Begin by picking up your “sled” inside the library. Then proceed down Main Street reading the pages of the story in the store windows. Then stop into the business and collect all of the obstacles in your sled’s way. Enjoy the ride and as always, happy reading!

On Feb. 9, a Homeschool Family Drop-In event took place. In celebration of Black History Month, stations were set up highlighting books by Black authors and illustrators with extension activities to complete at the library or at home. For Homeschool Thursday updates, email librarian@lakeplacidlibrary.org.

Ms. Linda’s Storytime

Ms. Linda shares a story, a song and an activity with children and families, every Friday morning at 10:30 in the children’s room. A few week s ago, the children participated in a story about a party that was happening where different well-known characters received special invitations. Recently, a Valentine’s Day story was shared with the attendees, along with a fun table time activity.
