Goat races dogs
–
Fabian Cayea won the junior dog derby Saturday afternoon sponsored by the Lake Placid Athletic Club with his three-dog team over the 3-mile course in 20 minutes, 39 seconds.
The race started at the arena and led around Mirror Lake, finishing at the arena.
Harold Monahan, with a lone hound, won the one-dog race over the shorter course in 3 minutes, 28 seconds. All races in this class were close.
A spirited battle between a collie, assisted by a number of collies and a goat, which was harnessed to a sled and driven over the course by Art Devlin with the canine entries, furnished one of the amusing sidelights of the derby. A young hero delved to the bottom of the pile-up of dogs, goat and drivers and snapped off the goat’s harness, after which the animal seemed well able to fend for himself.
Judged by the baying of the hound, a rumor was founded that a rabbit had been led over the course before the race. The animal is owned by Frankie Frisch, captain of the St. Louis Cardinals, who has done considerable rabbit hunting in this section. He is expected to use the racing hound when he arrives here later in the month.
The races were preceded by the official raising of the Lake Placid Athletic Club’s blue and gold flag, marking the opening of the winter sports season.

Toll house bids
–
Bids have been opened by the State Department of Public Works for the construction of a toll house on the new Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway.
Low bidder was the Frechette Construction company of Tupper Lake with a tender of $17,999. The toll house must be completed by Sept. 1, the date for the opening of the road.
To be located on the scenic route about 3 miles from the Wilmington highway, the toll house will be of stone and wood construction. An office and several other rooms will comprise the first floor. Six rooms for living quarters will be on the second floor. A booth between the driveways for the toll collectors and a covered passage over this section of the road are also called for.
The booth and passage cover will be of heavy timber construction. Asbestos slate roofs will cover the structures.

Cash register rats
–
The depression may be said to be an unwise subject for front page news stories, but it provides a haven for young families of rats. It is the habit to leave the drawer open of the cash register in the hardware store of Edwin Kennedy and Son when there is no money in the till or after store hours.
According to Rollie Kennedy, chairman of the North Elba Park Commission, employees were greeted one day by three young rats nested in a corner of the drawer. Mr. Kennedy was noncommittal as to what time of day the rats were deposited by their mother in the drawer, stating that in these times, it matters little whether the drawer is closed at any time. A busy cash register is now being recommended as a preventive for rat breeding as well as an anti-depression gesture.
