William C. Ughetta

William Casper Ughetta, 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Vero Beach, Florida, on Jan. 8, 2024.
Born on Feb. 8, 1933, he was the son of Casper and Frieda Ughetta and was raised in Scarsdale, New York.
In 1954, Bill graduated from Princeton University, where he majored in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Commissioned in the ROTC program while at Princeton, he was a lieutenant on the U.S.S. Pine Island prior to entering law school in 1956. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1959 and started his legal career at Shearman & Sterling in New York City.
In 1968, Bill joined Corning Glass Works and moved his family to Corning, New York. He was a lawyer for Corning, Inc. for over 30 years, serving as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary. He was a director of Siecor Corp., a joint venture of Corning and Siemens, and enjoyed hiking in the Alps with his German colleagues. He also served as a director of Covance, Inc. after the business was spun out of Corning.
Bill had a life-long interest in scouting and the great outdoors, and he particularly enjoyed spending time in the Adirondack Mountains and Lake Placid. He served on the boards of the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, the Lake Placid Institute and the Adirondack Health Foundation.
Bill enjoyed skiing in the winter and swimming in the summer in Lake Placid. He was an enthusiastic golfer and proud to have his hole-in-one at age 77.
Bill also served as a director and a member of the Executive Committee of the John’s Island Club and was a Lifetime Member of the University Club in New York City. He was an active bridge player with a keen mind and good sense of humor. Above all, he had a kind spirit and a deep love of his family.
Bill is survived by his four sons William Jr. (Margaret), Robert (Christine), Ted, and Mark (Elizabeth) and by nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by one daughter-in-law and one grandchild. Bill was great company to all and will be dearly missed.
He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lusk Ughetta.
