Anne Carroll

Anne Carroll, 92, of New London, New Hampshire, died from old age on Dec. 14, 2023.

Born on Nov. 21,1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she attended the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, then Chatham Hall in Chatham, Virginia class of 1949. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1953, and in 1968, received an MS in French Literature and Language at Georgetown University.

In 1954 and 1955, she volunteered in Mexico with the American Friends Service Committee and then worked at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital for cardiologist Isaac Starr, Maryland.

During the Kennedy Administration, she volunteered with the Foreign Student Service Council in Washington, D.C.

Anne had a life-long love for animals and belonged to a number of animal welfare and environmental protection organizations.

In the early 1970s, she was a founding member of the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in Saranac Lake, New York, and of Pet Care of Lake Placid. From 1975 to 1980, she managed the Pet Care Cat Shelter.

In 1980, she moved to New Hampshire, where she joined the Audubon Society of N.H. and became active in wildlife habitat conservation. In the town of Newbury, New Hampshire, where she resided from 1980 to 1990, she was instrumental in land acquisition for Stoney Brook Wildlife Sanctuary.

She was twice married and divorced and had no children. She is survived by a brother, Andrew R. Supplee of North Sutton, New Hampshire; sister Betty S. Valmarana of Charlottesville, Virginia; and six nieces and nephews.

At Anne’s request, there were no funeral services and following cremation, her ashes were scattered in a New Hampshire forest.
