Beverly Purdy Gregory Greenwood
Beverly Purdy Gregory Greenwood, 89, of Keene, passed away on April 1, 2023, with her loving family by her side under the care of High Peaks Hospice.
Born on Oct. 2, 1933, in Greece, New York, she was the daughter of Monty and Lorraine Purdy.
Bev moved to the mountains of Keene in 1946 and still could recount her first trip through the Cascade Pass as a harrowing experience. Bev graduated from Keene Central School in 1951. From there, she went to beautician school in Rochester and returned to Keene after completing school to help run the family establishment Monty’s Elm Tree Inn, which was owned and operated by her family from 1946-2004.
In 1953, Bev married Louis Gregory and went on to have four children: Sheila, Kevin, Kerry and Stacey (who passed in infancy). She later married Paul Greenwood in 1982.
Bev was also very involved in the community for all of her life. She was a member of St.Brendan’s Catholic Church in Keene, a member of the Red Hat Society and a volunteer for the annual Daffodil Drive for the American Cancer Society. She also transported residents for the Keene Valley Neighborhood House and enjoyed attending yard sales, making fudge and crafting.
She is survived by her daughter Sheila (Bill) Ferebee; sons Kevin (Theresa) Gregory and Kerry (Susan) Gregory; stepdaughter Dorthy (Tom) Stull; grandchildren Ryan (Stacey) Ferebee, Landyn (Steve) Hutchinson, John Ferebee, Jennifer (Ned) Whitney, Cori-Anne (Josh) Favro; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by daughter Stacey Gregory; second husband Paul Greenwood; brothers Ronald and Robert Purdy; and nephew Robert Purdy Jr.
A memorial service will be held at St. Brendan’s Church in late spring, the date is still to be determined by the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to High Peaks Hospice or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Many thanks to Elizabethtown Community Hospital, High Peaks Hospice, Keene Valley Neighborhood House and Heald Funeral Home.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Heald Funeral Home, 7521 Court St., Elizabethtown. To light a memorial candle or leave an online condolence, visit www.healdfuneralhomeinc.com.
