Mildred E. Martin Smith

Mildred E. Martin Smith, 74, known to those who loved her as Millie, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2023, surrounded by family at her daughter’s home in Virginia.

She was born on March 8, 1949, in Plattsburgh and grew up in Lake Placid. On June 24, 1967, she married Orville (Reggie) Smith. They spent their nearly 46 years of marriage in Reggie’s hometown of Keene, often venturing to their camp in the woods. After his passing, Millie remained in the home they had built together, enjoying the sunrise and the awesome views over the High Peaks in the Adirondack Mountains every day.

Millie worked in the cafeteria at Keene Central School for 15 years until she retired in 2009. She used her talents to create many wonderful crocheted items, which she either donated to the FitzPatrick Cancer Center or to those in her community. She greatly cherished visits and frequent conversations with her family and friends, and was most passionate and proud of each of her beloved grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Reggie; her mother, Martha; one sister, Linda; and two brothers, Steve and Gary.

Millie is survived by her son Bart and his wife Melanie; her daughter Lauri and her husband Steve Hilburger; and four grandchildren, Ashley (George) Diehl, Emily (Morgan) Hoshaw, Sam Hilburger, and Grace Hilburger. She is also survived by her two brothers, Ruby Martin and Billy (Sue) Martin; and extended family members, including many nephews, nieces, cousins, as well as friends.

It was Millie’s wish that there be no calling hours. A memorial service is being planned for early summer at Norton Cemetery in Keene to allow all those who loved her to gather and celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the CVPH FitzPatrick Cancer Center 2012 Cornelia St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901.

The family appreciates the care provided by CompassUS Hospice of Chantilly.
