Joan Tuomey Reiss

Joan Tuomey Reiss, 93, of 35 Essex St., Lake Placid, completed her journey to heaven Friday, Oct. 21, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.

Joan Reiss, born in Chicago Heights Illinois to John Sylvester Tuomey and Kathryn Dougherty, grew up in New York City and graduated from both Marymount School in New York City and Marymount College in Terrytown. She married the love of her life, Robert Raymond Reiss, and eventually moved to Lake Placid and raised her family as a loving mother of Robert Reiss Jr., Andrew Reiss and Kathryn Reiss-Hathaway. She spent 8 years as a Girl Scout leader, was president of the Lake Placid Hospital Auxiliary for 4 years, a member of the Rosary and Altar Society, served on the St. Agnes Church board for two terms, volunteered for the Ecumenical Food Pantry, and was one of the only two finalists that finished a 50-mile swim over 3 months in 1981 to support the Red Cross. She was a buyer for High Falls Gorge in Wilmington, an avid tennis player and a graduate of the Offshore Sailing School in New York.

Joan Reiss is survived by her son Robert Raymond Reiss Jr., his spouse and their family of Franklin Park, New Jersey; son Andrew Reiss of Nashville Tennessee; his wife and their family; and daughter Kathryn Reiss-Hathaway, her spouse and their family of Lake Placid. She is a proud grandmother of six: Robert Reiss III, AJ Reiss, Chelsea Abrams, Joel Silver, and Jacob and Sierra Reiss. Joan is also a great grandmother of three: Ivy, and Ashton Abrams and Joycelyn Reiss.

She is predeceased by her loving parents John and Kathryn Tuomey, her cherished husband Robert Reiss and her sweet grandson Robert Reiss III. Calling hours were 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23 at the M. B. Clark, Inc. Funeral Home in Lake Placid, with a Catholic Funeral Mass at St. Agnes Church Monday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Yonkovig officiating. Interment followed at the St. Agnes Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the High Peaks Hospice or the Robert R. Reiss Community Treatment Center at St. Joseph’s Addiction Treatment and Recovery Center in Saranac Lake.
