Mary Margaret Cayea

Mary Margaret Cayea, 93, a longtime resident of Lake Placid, passed away peacefully on Oct. 11, 2021.

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary was born in Wilmington to Harry and Margaret Courtney on Nov. 15, 1927. Her mother died a few weeks after her birth.

She lived in Wilmington until the passing of her father, moving to Lake Placid at the age of 13 and living with her aunt Nellie Ryan, who was like a mother to her.

She graduated from the Lake Placid High School in 1947 and worked in her aunt’s women’s clothing store, learning the family business. She met and married Theodore E. Cayea in 1954. They raised two children, Ann and Ted.

Throughout her life, she was a very active member of St. Agnes parish in Lake Placid. Mary enjoyed knitting and loved to quilt with her close friends. She loved to spend time at their camp in Saranac Lake, swimming and boating with her family.

Survivors include her two children: Ann Fitzgerald of Lake Placid, and Ted Cayea and his wife Fayne of Essex Junction, Vermont; grandchildren Conan Fitzgerald and his wife Sarah, Sarah Robinson and her husband Rob, Scott Cayea and his wife Danara; great-grandchildren Sean Fitzgerald, Mollie Fitzgerald, and Wyatt Robinson and her sister-in-law Dorothy LeClair. She also leaves Lisa Rissberger, her lunch buddy and good friend.

Mary was predeceased by her husband and son-in-law Edward Fitzgerald.

The family would like to thank the staff at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid for such wonderful care of Mary.

Calling hours will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15 at the M.B. Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A Memorial Mass will be held at 9 .m. Saturday, Oct. 16 St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid.
