He was born in Toronto and lived in Vero Beach, Florida, having come from Regina, Saskatchewan, Doylestown Pennsylvania, Redding Connecticut, and Wilmington, New York.

He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan as a professional engineer and obtained a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Western Ontario. He met and married the everlasting love of his life Shirley while they were both attending the University of Western Ontario, and they subsequently had three children, Michael, Terri and Suzanne.
