John Brown Farm hosting snowshoe event Saturday

LAKE PLACID — John Brown Lives! welcomes all to join in a 2.23-mile snowshoe at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site on Feb. 21 to remember 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery who was killed while out for a jog on a quiet neighborhood street by a white father-son duo in Georgia.

We will gather at 1 p.m. in the lower barn at the John Brown Farm and set out together from there. “It’s a gift to stand in solidarity in these urgent times. We hope you’ll join us — maybe you’re a seasoned Adirondacker, or maybe it’s your first time snowshoeing. Either way, all are welcome,” says Anna Forsman, Arts & Cultural Programming Director for John Brown Lives!

Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper Jones, founded The Ahmaud Arbery Foundation after her son’s murder to keep his memory alive and “to advance a movement of love, empathy, and equality.”

Inspired by The Ahmaud Arbery Foundation’s annual “Run with Maud” event, our third-annual silent snowshoe walk at the John Brown Farm aims to open space for the collective processing of grief and connect North Country neighbors to each other, Ahmaud, and the natural world.

Arbery’s killing was the impetus for A Memorial Field, a public artwork by JBL!-Creatives New York collaborating artist, Ren Davidson Seward, that was installed at the John Brown Farm from 2020-2024. For more information, visit AMemorialField.org.

Following the snowshoe, there will be a gathering in the lower barn with hot chocolate, tea, and light refreshments. Participants are asked to bring their own gear if possible. Extra pairs of snowshoes will be available.

“We are grateful to be able to share quiet trails here on the landscape John Brown once loved, to remember Ahmaud Arbery as we continue on the path toward equality and justice,” says historic site interpreter, Cheryl Craft.
