LAKE PLACID — It’s that time of the year.
An otherwise quiet hangar at the Lake Placid Airport came bustling to life and transformed into a methodical assembly line on Wednesday, Nov. 19, as more than a dozen members of the Lake Placid Garden Club worked throughout the day to assemble more than 100 swags soon to dot Lake Placid for the holiday season.
It’s one of the garden club’s most cherished traditions, and one that’s been perfected to a science over the years. Piles of fresh bows were sourced and trimmed before the club members — all volunteers — worked at various stations throughout the hangar to shape, tie and decorate the bows.
The final, and most important, step of the assembly process is a meticulous quality control inspection from Judy Shea, a longtime garden club member with decades of experience, to determine whether a swag has satisfied all of the specs and is fit for display throughout the village.
Lake Placid Garden Club Village Swag Committee Chair Paula Politi already had the display locations calculated. These include 15 at and around Brewster Park, 24 in and around Mid’s Park, 13 on Main Street around the Alpine Mall, eight around the hitching post, eight around the former Starbucks building on Main Street, three near the library, seven near the post office, nine near the Generations restaurant, five near Big Z’s and six around village signs.

This adds up to 98, though Politi said there’ll probably be a few extra that will push the total north of 100. The locations are similar to past years, with some new spots based on community feedback — something that Politi said she takes into account when finalizing the list each year. She anticipated that all of the swags would be up throughout the village by Thanksgiving at the latest.
