KEENE — The Adirondack Land Trust has partnered with Birds & Beans Coffee to launch the Migratory Bird Spotting Challenge, which gives birders in the Adirondack Park a chance to win Smithsonian Certified Bird Friendly Coffee through May 31.
How the Birds & Beans Migratory Bird Spotting Challenge works:
— Download a challenge card at adirondacklandtrust.org/birds-and-beans-migratory-bird-spotting-challenge/
— Go birding in the Adirondack Park through May 31.
— Look for the six species on the challenge card: scarlet tanager, chestnut-sided warbler, wood thrush, Baltimore oriole, American redstart, Eastern kingbird.
— The first time you see each species, email outreach@adirondacklandtrust.org the date and location of your sighting.
— When you’ve seen all six species, email outreach@adirondacklandtrust.org with the dates and locations of all six sightings.
The first person to email they have seen each species will win a 12-ounce bag of Birds & Beans coffee for a total of six prizes. The first person to email that they have seen all six species will win two pounds of Birds & Beans coffee.
“With migratory birds returning, May is an incredible month for birding in the Adirondacks,” says Adirondack Land Trust Stewardship Manager Derek Rogers. “This is a fun way for people to experience the habitat migratory birds rely on and understand the important role conservation plays in protecting that habitat.”
Habitat loss throughout the ranges of migratory birds as well as exposure to pesticides and toxic agro-chemicals are the leading causes for the loss of nearly 3 billion breeding adult birds between 1970 and 2019, according to a 2019 study led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
The Adirondack Land Trust works to conserve forests, waters, farms, and wild places across a region where migratory birds live and breed in summer. Birds & Beans Coffee helps protect the winter habitat of migratory birds by working with family farms in Central America that provide forest-like habitat for birds by planting under a tree canopy rather than clearing farms of vegetation. This shared commitment to conserving bird habitat is why the Adirondack Land Trust is proud to have Birds & Beans Coffee as a Business & Community Partner.
