LAKE PLACID — The John Brown Farm State Historic Site will host a Civil War encampment weekend from Friday, Aug. 9 to Sunday, Aug. 11 featuring historians and reenactors from the Black Phalanx Brigade and Fort Tribute.

The weekend will include an encampment, demonstrations, films and lectures by historians. There will be no charge for admission.

Visitors will be able to visit an encampment, including soldiers’ quarters and a sutler, or seller of wares; engage in conversations with soldiers, learn about civil war military life, see musket demonstrations and attend talks by historians. Two speakers will give formal talks: War scholar and living history reenactor Joshua Wingler from Plattsburgh and DC Overby of the Black Phalanx Brigade, afro-militaria historians and reenactors. Overby will speak about African American soldiers in the civil war.

Two films will be shown in the big tent. On Friday night, “The Horse Soldiers” will be shown, and on Saturday night, “The Red Badge of Courage.”

The public is also invited to attend the dedication of a new cenotaph for William Appo Jr. at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at the North Elba Cemetery on Old Military Road. The ceremony will pay tribute to local African American veteran William Appo Jr. Cpl. Appo joined the New York 30th regiment, participated in several battles and was killed at the Second Manassas in August 1862. A memorial will be dedicated to his service.
