CrowdStrike strikes county services in Essex, Franklin
SARANAC LAKE — The global Microsoft outage caused by a faulty CrowdStrike security update led to government departments in Essex and Franklin counties having their services disrupted Friday, July 19.
Dispatcher Julia Coffman of the Saranac Lake Police Department said that when she came into work Friday morning, she was informed that computer systems were down for emergency services in both counties. When called, emergency service workers in Franklin and Essex counties said they were not at liberty to give details.
Friday morning, the Essex County Department of Motor Vehicles posted on Facebook that their computers had lost function with no time for when they would be back in service. At 1 p.m., they gave an update that they were able to perform online transactions again.
Essex County DMV Clerk Chelsea Merrihew said that their computer systems had been down all day, and the online transaction portal was down.
“We could not process any transactions,” she said.
They were first notified between 7 and 7:30 a.m. and received an update between 9:30 and 10 a.m., saying that the issue was being worked on but had not been fixed yet. By 2 p.m., Merrihew said the online portal was fixed but was apparently still in “spotty” condition.
