WILMINGTON — With snow in the forecast late this week and a warming trend predicted for next week, the ski season is winding down at Whiteface Mountain.

The annual Pond Skimming Contest is set for noon Saturday, April 6. Sign-ups are limited to the first 100 contestants. Skiers and snowboarders can secure a spot prior to the competition between 8 and 11 a.m. at guest services. Whiteface officials ask people “to bring your A-game and your most creative costumes if you’re taking the plunge!” Spectators can watch the show at the Round-A-Bout trail.

As for the last day open for skiing, Olympic Regional Development Authority Communications Director Darcy Norfolk said Tuesday that the plan is to close mid-week after the solar eclipse watch party on Monday, April 8 and reopen the following Friday and weekend, depending on the weather and ski conditions.

“It is too early to tell on the following weekend at this time,” Norfolk wrote in an email on April 2.

On Wednesday, Whiteface officials decided on their operational plan for the end of ski season:

– Whiteface be open daily through Monday, April 8.

– We will close Tuesday, April 9; Wednesday, April 10; and Thursday, April 11.

– We will reopen Friday, April 12 through Sunday, April 14.

– Operational plans after April 14 are TBD.

– All schedules are subject to change based on weather and conditions.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a high near 38 on Friday in Wilmington, with a high near 39 on Saturday and 45 on Sunday. Highs are expected to be in the 50s Monday through Wednesday.

As of Thursday morning, Whiteface had 41 of 96 trails open, serviced by four out of 12 lifts, and the ski center had 4 to 6 inches of fresh snow (as of 7 a.m.) with more snow falling.

The Whiteface Mountain Ski Center closed for the season on April 16 last year.
