Adirondack Life magazine names photography contest winners

JAY — Adirondack Life magazine recently named the winners of its annual photography contest.

One overall grand prize was awarded, as well as nine awards in Landscape, Recreation, and Wildlife categories.

Michael Morton, of Lyons Falls, took the grand-prize photograph, “Serenity with Man’s Best Friend,” a portrait of his 9-year-old Newfoundland pup Galloway on a snowy day.

First place in the Landscape category went to Eric Hillpot, of Rochester, for “The Long and Lonely Trail,” on the Van Hoevenberg trail to Mount Marcy.

David Wexler, of Commack, came in second with “Blue Mountain Lake at Daybreak.”

Third place was awarded to Susan Martini, of Walpole, Massachusetts, for “The Joy of Countryside,” of a sunflower field in Essex.

Sean Platt, of Saranac Lake, was the first-place winner in the Recreation category, for “Ausable Bomber,” a closeup of Fran Betters’s classic fly held by Wilmington fishing guide Rachel Finn. “Powder Day,” a scene from Whiteface Mountain, by John Faltus, of Saranac Lake, was the second-place winner. Third place went to Christopher Battles, of Indian Lake, for “Bald Eagle’s Winter Take Off,” a composite photograph taken on Lake Abanakee.

In the Wildlife category, first place went to Alan Swire, of Pittsford, for “Heron in Tree on Tongue Mountain,” a shot set against the haze of last summer’s Canadian wildfires. Miguel Engelhardt, of Plattsburgh, won second place with a photograph taken at Ausable Point, “Mink on Point.” Michael Chatt, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, came in third with “Ruby-throated Hummingbird,” snapped in Jay.

In addition, 13 images earned honorable mentions. Winners receive a specially commissioned work of pottery by Sue Young, of Jay. Winning photographs are published in the April 2020 issue of the magazine and can be seen at www.adirondacklife.com.
