WILMINGTON — High Falls Gorge — located at at 4761 state Route 86 — has long been known as one of the Adirondack Park’s most unique summer attractions, but over the years, this popular tourist destination has evolved and grown into a year-round place for exploration. On Saturday, Dec. 16, the property opened for the winter season.

“Attractions must be creative to continue attracting new visitors,” said owner Kathryn Reiss.

A family-owned corporation in Lake Placid, Roanka Attractions, has maintained High Falls Gorge since leasing the falls in 1976. After 25 years, Roanka purchased the land and turned the business operation from a summer-only quick stop to a year-round business with evolving entertainment options for the whole family. Initially opened in the 1890s, the falls were famous, with adventure-seeking visitors providing safe passage on wooden platforms to view the spectacular waterfalls. From wood platforms to modern steel structures that take guests into the heart of the waterfalls, High Falls Gorge has adapted to the times to keep generations coming back for more all year.

High Falls Gorge continues to update its offerings. In 2012, for example, two glass platforms over the waterfalls were installed for more scenic views and a thrilling experience. In 2022, the waterfall walk expanded its offerings to include a path for stairless accessibility through the falls, and there will be an additional viewing platform installed in 2024. A nature trail loop has also been added to the property to allow visitors to explore nature on a beginner to intermediate-level hike through the forest.

“Diversity is our key,” said Reiss when discussing High Falls Gorge’s new and adaptive features.

The main attraction remains the four waterfalls that travel over 600 feet through a section of the West Branch of the AuSable River. Modern bridges and groomed paths allow visitors to enjoy a nature stroll while viewing the plunging waterfalls as they flow through dark pools, potholes and the scenic splendor of the gorge. Educational signs along the way tell the story of New York’s largest pothole, ancient rocks, the climax forest, and the history of the river. Platforms on both sides of the river and four suspension bridges that pass directly over the falls provide safe access to photographic vantage points.

In the winter, High Falls Gorge offers access to view the ice formations on its waterfalls by providing traction devices placed under your boot for safe walking along the trail. After viewing the waterfalls, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, weather permitting, along the separate one-mile nature trail. Easy-to-use snowshoes are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the visit.

The winter season runs through March 30, and the hours are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday to Tuesday. Admission is $18 for adults and $14 for children (ages 4-12). An additional fee applies to snowshoe rentals. The River View Cafe at High Falls Gorge — open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. — offers lighter fare with comfort foods, specialty coffees and baked goods in the cold season.

During the warmer season, High Falls Gorge is open in 2024 from April 26 to Oct. 27, with hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
