Mary Kelley’s legacy continues with book donation

Mrs. Mihill’s Lake Placid Elementary School first-grade students pose with their first book of the year, “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds, thanks to contributions from the community to the Mary Kelley Book Club. From left are Noah, Trever, Juliana, Emmy, Hayden, Harmony, Myla, Edis, Hajrija and Mariah. Coincidentally, the mural they are standing in front of represents “The Dot.” It was painted last year by LPES Principal Sonja Franklin. Each student designed a dot in Mrs. Philion’s art class, and it was added to the mural. (Provided photo — Alicia Brandes)

LAKE PLACID — Mrs. Mihill’s Lake Placid Elementary School first-grade students recently received their first book of the year, “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds, thanks to contributions from the community to the Mary Kelley Book Club. Each student designed a dot in Mrs. Philion’s art class, and it was added to the mural. All students in kindergarten through second grade received “The Dot.” Anyone who would like to make a donation to the book club can send a check made out to Scholastic Book Club and mail it to Alicia Brandes, Lake Placid Elementary School, 318 Old Military Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946. Reynolds, the author, says, “‘The Dot’ is about getting started — getting unstuck. It is also about creative teaching, exploring an idea in many ways, and sharing our gifts with others.”
