While taking photos of a swimmer on Mirror Lake at Mid’s Park in Lake Placid — shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday, July 15 as he was reporting on the New York Annual Loon Census — Lake Placid News Editor Andy Flynn captured images of an osprey swooping in, splashing down, and snatching a trout with its talons, then flying away to eat its catch. In the first photo, you can see the osprey flying in from above the swimmer’s head. In the last photo, you can see the osprey flying away with its catch. Osprey feed on fish, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, “so look for them along coastlines on Long Island, and on Adirondack lakes, rivers, and wetlands.” They lay eggs in a large nest of sticks at the top of dead trees or on artificial nesting platforms or other structures. Osprey are usually in New York state from April to September, and some migrate to South America for the winter. At the time these photos were taken, Flynn was sitting next to Lake Placid’s Carol Pinney, who was volunteering to count common loons for the loon census from 8 to 9 a.m. She counted one loon, but the osprey was the highlight of the day.

Starting at $1.44/week.
