Adirondack Life brings home awards
JAY — Adirondack Life won a total of 13 awards — two gold, five silver, three bronze, two awards of merit and Magazine of the Year (circulation under 35,000) at the International Regional Media Association annual conference, presented May 4 to 8 in Portland, Oregon. The awards, judged by a panel of industry experts from outside IRMA, honored work from 2022.
Magazine of the Year is an award that recognizes continued overall excellence, encompassing the highest standards of written and visual content. “It’s our passion and responsibility to share the stories of this place,” said executive editor and co-publisher Annie Stoltie. “But being recognized for our work is an incredible honor for all of us at Adirondack Life.”
Stoltie’s “The Town that Generosity Built” (January/February), about Dr. Edward Livingstone Trudeau’s enduring legacy in Saranac Lake, took Gold in the Profile category. Stoltie also won bronze in the Column category for Short Carries.
“The Standoff” (September/October), by Adam Federman, a look at the 1974 conflict at Moss Lake and the larger struggle for Indigenous rights, won Gold for Historic Feature.
Paul Greenberg took Silver in both the Nature and Environment category for “A Light Bulb Moment” (March/April) and in the Recreation Feature category for “A Fish Tale” (January/February).
Pamela Underhill Karaz’s images won Silver in both the Photo Series category for “Call of the Wild” (November/December) and the Cover category for November/December’s “Let It Snow,” which was designed by Mark Mahorsky.
In the Art Direction of a Single Story category, Mark Mahorsky received Silver for “Serpentarium” (March/April). Mahorsky also won Bronze in Overall Art Direction (35,000 or less circulation) for the Guide to the Great Outdoors, September/October and At Home in the Adirondacks issues.
“As Adirondack as It Gets” (July/August), by Senior Editor Lisa Bramen, won Bronze in the Travel Feature category.
Senior Editor Niki Kourofsky won an Award of Merit in the Reader Service category for “The Roots of Rustic” (At Home in the Adirondacks).
Natural Builders (At Home in the Adirondacks), by Jeff Nadler, received an Award of Merit for Single Photo.
IRMA has 25 member magazines from Arizona to Bermuda, Maine to British Columbia. It was established in the 1960s to help regional magazine publishers, editors and art and circulation directors share ideas. IRMA’s website is www.irmamagazines.com.
Additionally, Adirondack Life’s November/December cover, designed by Mark Mahorsky and featuring a photograph by Pamela Underhill Karaz, was a finalist for the American Society of Magazine Editors Best Local Magazine Cover 2023, alongside The New Yorker, Texas Monthly and 5280.
