Ski season wrapping up as temps rise

LAKE PLACID — Skiing opportunities in the Adirondacks are disappearing as spring temperatures rise, but there is still some time to hit the slopes before all the snow melts.

Cross-country ski centers in the Olympic Region recently closed.
The last day of skiing at Mount Van Hoevenberg, operated by the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, was Saturday, April 8.
On April 1, the Cascade Welcome Center, operated by the Adirondack Mountain Club, announced on its Facebook page that the ski and snowshoe trails were closed for the season.
Over the weekend, the Scotts Cobble Nordic Center at the Craig Wood Golf Course announced on its Facebook page that the new winter venue had closed for the season the previous week:
“THANK YOU to everyone that used the trails this winter and embraced Scotts Cobble as a new trail system and hub for the community. Whether getting out on the trails or warming up next to a bonfire, a lot of fun was had this winter! We are looking forward to building on year one.”

At Whiteface Mountain, skiing and snowboarding was still available last weekend as the annual pond-skimming contest was held on Saturday, and the Easter morning service was held at Little Whiteface on Sunday, followed by the Easter egg hunt, a popular family activity that featured a pink Easter bunny on skis. The ski center is expected to be open daily through Sunday, April 16, according to the Whiteface website.
The April 12 snow report at Whiteface let skiers know that the groomers had most of the trails prepped and ready:
“Bear Den and Lookout Mountain areas are on hiatus but will return for the next winter season. We anticipate opening with 5 lifts, and 56 trails with Spring conditions. High today of 62F is expected, grab a jacket & leave the winter coat in the closet.”
On Saturday, April 15, Whiteface will host the Apple Butter Open, sponsored by Forrence Orchards of Peru. Starting at noon, skiers are invited to test their skills “and your knees” at this amateur mogul event on the bottom of Brookside trail. For more information, visit whiteface.com.
The April 12 snow report at Gore Mountain in North Creek, also operated by ORDA, announced that the venue is expected to be open daily through Sunday:
“We don’t have a closing day yet!”
The weather forecast at Gore on Wednesday called for mostly sunny skies and a high of 65 degrees as it planned to open 43 trails with seven lifts.

Gore opened for the 2022-23 ski season on Nov. 18, and Whiteface opened on Nov. 19.
Last year, the Gore and Whiteface ski centers closed for the season on May 1, which was a record. Since Gore opened in 1964, it was the latest closing ever and the first season it was open into May.
