Lake Placid High School students to vote for Winter Carnival king, queen

LAKE PLACID — Who will be Lake Placid High School’s 2023 Winter Carnival king and queen?

The school announced the candidates for king and queen on Friday, March 3, just over one week from the start of Winter Carnival, which is scheduled for March 14 to 16.

The candidates — which teachers and students in grades 9 through 12 will vote on — are Adelisa Ahmemulic, Grace Carlson, Julia Crawford, Sydney Lawrence, Cody Montagnola, Brady Tremblay, Foster Wood and Alexander Wright.

The opening ceremony of the LPHS Winter Carnival will be held during school hours on Tuesday, March 14 and the coronation of this year’s king and queen will be in the school gymnasium at 6 p.m. that night.

Cora Clark, a retired nurse for the Lake Placid Central School District, was named this year’s archbishop for the Winter Carnival.

Adelisa Ahmemulic

Adelisa Ahmemulic is the daughter of Almir and Sanija of Montenegro. Her family includes her sisters Anita and Nejra. She enjoys basketball, soccer, reading, going to the gym and working part-time at Jimmy’s 21. She was on the crew of the school musical, “The Addams Family” and competes in soccer and basketball. For Ahmemulic’s capstone project, she will be teaching the physical education classes how to play handball. She played for seven years and wants to show others how fun it is to play. Ahmemulic plans to attend North County Community College in the fall for business administration and to play soccer. She is most thankful for her parents and all of the support they give her, her sisters for always being there and Strawberry Refreshers from SB. She is especially proud that she moved to America with her sister and learned English so quickly.

Grace Carlson

Grace Carlson is the daughter of Olaf and Christina of Lake Placid. Her family includes her sisters Alida and Maria and brothers Jesse, Elijah and Joseph. She enjoys competing in soccer and other sports, hiking, cooking, organizing spaces, painting, drawing and calligraphy. Carlson is a member of National Honor Society, Service Club, Drama Club, Class of 2023 secretary, and was in the cast of the school musical, “The Addams Family.” She is also a member of LPHS Select Ensemble Group, where she was picked to sing alongside schoolmates at various local events within the community. She is a counselor with Lake Placid Youth Commission. For Carlson’s capstone project, she completed an internship over the summer shadowing Ann Stillman O’Leary at her interior design firm and will be painting a mural inside LPHS. She plans to attend college after graduation. She is most thankful for being born into a big family and Shirley Temples. She is proud of the progress she has made with her soccer skills through her time on the varsity team.

Julia Crawford

Julia Crawford is the daughter of Mark Crawford and Sarah Crawford of Lake Placid. Her family includes her sister Grace; stepsisters Barrett and Bailey and stepmother Christie. She enjoys playing volleyball, traveling and hanging out with her friends. Crawford competes in volleyball, basketball and tennis. She is a member of National Honor Society and Activity Club. She has worked at Crowne Plaza Beach and Lisa G’s. For Crawford’s capstone project, she will be shadowing a wedding planner. She plans to attend college after graduation. She is most thankful for her family and how they have “pushed her out of her comfort zone,” her friends and sports teams for making her sports career “so memorable.” Her greatest accomplishment is her volleyball career, which is her favorite sport because she “loves the game and is constantly surrounded by her friends.” She is proud of how far she’s come and proud of winning the gold letter All Star award, First Team All Star and 5th team All State.

Sydney Lawrence

Sydney Lawrence is the daughter of MJ and Don Lawrence of Lake Placid. Her siblings include her sister Chelby and brother Jack. She competes in volleyball and SLP Lacrosse. Lawrence is class president, a member of National Honor Society and a member of Student Council. She works at The Cottage. For Lawrence’s capstone project, she created an Instagram page for LPMHS called “bluebomberathletics.” Her goal is to raise school spirit, which she believes has increased since the account was created. She plans to attend college after graduation. She is most thankful for the support of her friends and family throughout her high school career. She is proud of her leadership role as class president during her junior and senior year, and along with the other officers, they have raised thousands of dollars for their upcoming senior trip.

Cody Montagnola

Cody Montagnola is the son of Calista Montagnola of Wilmington. His family includes his sister Georgianna and brother Brayden. He competes in soccer and tennis and enjoys eating and sleeping. Montagnola is a member of Drama Club, chorus, Select Ensemble and Environmental Club. He works at The Cottage. For Montagnola’s capstone project, he is shadowing the elementary school physical education teacher. He plans to attend North Country Community College and become an elementary school gym teacher. He is most thankful for his family, friends, and everything bagels with cream cheese. He is most proud of having the confidence to take on a lead role in this year’s musical, “The Addams Family.”

Brady Tremblay

Brady Tremblay is the son of Shawn and Sarah Tremblay of Lake Placid. His family includes his sister Juliana. He enjoys golf, hunting and boating. In school, he competes in soccer, hockey and golf. He works for the town of North Elba at Craig Wood Golf Course and the Lake Placid Toboggan Chute. For Tremblay’s capstone project, he is doing a junior golf clinic at Craig Wood Golf Course. He plans to attend Methodist University in North Carolina, majoring in business administration and professional golf management, while playing Division III. He is most thankful for his family and the opportunity to grow up in Lake Placid. He is most proud of his accomplishments in golf this year and for qualifying to play in two national tournaments in Illinois and Louisiana.

Foster Wood

Foster Wood is the son of Brian Wood and Melanie O’Brien of Lake Placid. His family includes his brother Parker and sisters Magnolia and Willow. Wood enjoys hunting, fishing, working on his truck and playing with his dogs. He competes in football, basketball, baseball and previously hockey. He is a member of National Honor Society and attends Adirondack Educational Center for Natural Resource Science. He also works doing landscaping, construction and caretaking. For Wood’s capstone project, he is shadowing the NYSDEC. After graduation, he plans to attend a four year college studying Environmental Studies with the goal to become a New York State Forest Ranger. He is most thankful for his family, friends, and all of his teachers and coaches while attending LPHS. He is most thankful for keeping up his GPA during school and winning multiple Section 7 awards during his high school career.

Alexander Wright

Alexander Wright is the son of Jacob and Tara Wright of Lake Placid. His family includes his brothers Nate, Jonathan and sister Juliet. He competes in soccer and basketball. He enjoys skiing and working out. Wright is president of National Honor Society and founder/team captain of the Robotics Club. He works at Ampersand Bay Resort. For Wright’s capstone project, he is raising funds for robotics by doing community building sports events. After graduation, he plans to attend the Nolan School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University. He is most thankful for his family, friends and supportive teachers and coaches. He is most proud of completing a 90-mile canoe race with his father and two brothers. He had never been canoeing before and with the team consisting of three kids, others did not think they would finish. They were all proud to finish the race.
