2 village board seats open for March election

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Village Board of Trustees is seeking candidates to run for two seats on the village board. The village election is in March, and so far, only one person has shown interest in running for a seat.

Village Trustee Peter Holderied, whose term ends in March, is not eligible for reelection because he’s reached the village board’s term limit — three consecutive terms. Former Trustee Jason Leon’s term was also set to end in March, though he resigned this past October after being elected to the North Elba Town Council in November 2021. Leon was also serving his third and final consecutive term on the village board.

Katie Brennan, who was appointed to finish Leon’s term this past November, has been the only person to show interest in running for one of the two vacant seats, according to village Clerk Anita Estling.

To qualify for formal candidacy, people interested in running for office have to submit a petition with 50 signatures to Estling by Feb. 14. Candidates must be 18 years old or older, a citizen of the United States and be a resident of the village by election day, March 21. Anyone interested in petitioning to run for one of the two village trustee positions can email Estling at lpclerk@villageoflakeplacid.ny.gov. The petition period started on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

People who want to run for the village board would likely have to run on an independent party line. Estling said it’s not too late to run as a Democratic or Republican candidate, but someone running on those party lines would have to be nominated through a caucus and/or a primary.

“In my years here, there has never been a caucus or primary for a village position,” Estling said in an email Thursday.

If no one else aside from Brennan petitions to run for office, at least one of the vacant village board seats would have to be filled with write-in votes.

Starting at $1.44/week.
