LAKE PLACID — The cauldron for the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games will be unveiled in Brewster Park today, exactly one month away from the Games’ opening ceremony on Jan. 12, 2023.

The unveiling will start at 5 p.m., but the cauldron won’t be illuminated today — the LED cauldron will come to life for the first time during the Games’ opening ceremony. It will be extinguished at the closing ceremony on Jan. 22. The cauldron’s reveal will follow games and giveaways with the 2023 Games mascot, Adirondack Mac.

The 12-foot-high cauldron has been hidden behind an opaque partition since it was installed in Brewster Park last week, keeping the cauldron’s custom design a secret until its official reveal. The cauldron was designed and created by Argyle-based company Adirondack Studios, the same business that designed the award podiums for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

The cauldron won’t just be used for the Games, according to Karlan Jessen, the head of sustainability and legacy for the 2023 Games. She said last month that the Adirondack Sports Council, which will assume responsibility for the cauldron after the Games, anticipates “legacy use” for the cauldron — it could go on to be used for the Empire State Winter Games and other events in town, Jessen said. She added that the cauldron is “somewhat portable,” so it could be moved around the village when needed. Jessen doesn’t expect that the cauldron will remain in Brewster Park long-term, but she said the council hasn’t landed on a home base for it yet.

Starting at $1.44/week.
