LAKE PLACID — On Friday, Nov. 11, American Legion Post 326 will host its first parade since 2019 — before the coronavirus pandemic and Main Street construction project prevented this village’s traditional Veterans Day and Memorial Day parades from being held, according to Post Commander Doug Hoffman.

“We’re pretty excited that, No. 1, the construction is done, and No. 2, the pandemic is not limiting us,” Hoffman said Wednesday. “Life is back to usual, almost.”

Post officials will also mark the day by lowering and raising six flags that have been flying since Memorial Day in honor of local veterans who are no longer with us. Another flag at the North Elba Cemetery is also maintained by the post in honor of all deceased local veterans.

The ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Adirondack Community Church and the World War I memorial, where a flag honoring Dale Bath will be lowered and a flag honoring Gary Sheffield will be raised. At 9:50 a.m., a ceremony will be held at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid on Old Military Road, lowering a flag honoring Peter Kremser and raising a flag honoring Harry LaBrake. At 10:10 a.m., a ceremony will be held at the Lake Placid Health and Medical Fitness Center next to Elderwood, where a flag will be raised honoring Bart Patnode.

The Veterans Day parade will begin at Brewster Park at the bottom of Saranac Avenue, where participants will travel up Main Street to the Legion home at the corner of Main and School streets. The parade will include veterans, the Lake Placid High School Band, Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Placid Police Department and Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service.

The closing ceremony begins around 11:30 a.m. at the Legion home, where flags will be lowered honoring Donald Whittemore, Bert Wood and Phil Thayer. Flags will also be raised honoring Forrest Walton, Ernie Hough and Andy Barney. Retired flags will be presented to next of kin in attendance.

The American Legion Post 326 Auxiliary will be laying a wreath during the service as well.

The traditional luncheon, which had been canceled the past two years due to COVID-19, will be hosted by the auxiliary, it will begin after the ceremonies at the Legion hall.

The community, friends and families are invited to attend all the ceremonies.
