LAKE PLACID — Northwood School recently began its 117th year with a full complement of 191 students from 24 countries and 21 U.S. states.

The school is historically known for strong academics and athletics with last year’s class attending some of the country’s most prestigious colleges and universities including Stanford, Notre Dame, and Brandeis.

Among the school’s academic offerings are advanced studies in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) research, and advanced humanities research into both global and local topics.

In addition, 14 graduates have enjoyed careers in the National Hockey League while Northwood graduates in a variety of sports have participated in every Winter Olympics since 1960.

This year’s class is also the most geographically diverse in its history and represents a unique opportunity for the school’s students, as well as for members of the greater community.

During his opening remarks, Head of School Mike Maher noted, “The diversity of this year’s student body provides all at Northwood with the opportunity to learn from each other, understand more from people of different backgrounds, and will enrich all of our lives as we grow together with others from countries throughout the world.”

Junior Happi, a senior and a member of Northwood’s soccer program, is from Zimbabwe and shares “I enjoy Northwood’s smaller community. It’s like a family where everyone works together to elevate you, to help you be your best.” Happi will be applying to the University of Virginia, among other colleges and universities.
