LAKE PLACID — Renovations have begun at the former Bowlwinkles bowling alley on Main Street, and new owners Rob Kane and Tom Anderson hope to reopen by the end of this year as Big Z’s Hangout at Lake Placid Lanes.

Kane was busy pulling insulation out of the bowling alley’s ceiling on Monday, July 18. The work was a little different from what he’s used to — he said he used to fix helicopters in the Marine Corps — but he was pitching in with hopes that the bowling alley would be ready for opening toward the end of this fall, ahead of the FISU World University Games next January.

He said the revamped lanes will have full bowling with a new bowling system and a “barcade-style hangout” that’s family and adult-friendly, with a lot of TVs around for sports fans. Kane said he and Anderson want to serve classic bowling grub like burgers and fries with some options for vegetarians, too. Kane, who’s also the owner and manager of the Great Adirondack Brewing Company in Lake Placid, grew up in this village and said it’s important to him that the bowling alley appeals to local life. Kane said he and Anderson are interested in using local ingredients for their food as much as they can to keep the alley’s fare locally sourced.

Starting at $1.44/week.
