LAKE PLACID — This year, the Lake Placid Marathon and Half will return to its normal date — the second Sunday in June — for the first time since 2019, a year before the coronavirus pandemic caused its cancellation in 2020.

“It’s nice to get it at its proper time,” said race owner/operator Greg Borzilleri. “I think people appreciate it better in the spring. We’re mostly back to normal.”

Last year, the race was held in September, due to COVID precautions earlier in the running season, and the race course changed dramatically due to construction at the Olympic Speedskating Oval. The races typically started on Main Street in front of the oval and finished on the oval. This year, the 26.2-mile race course on June 12 will remain the same as 2021, starting on Parkside Drive next to the Mirror Lake beach house and finishing on Station Street in front of Jewtraw Park. The new course worked well, according to Borzilleri, but he anticipates an eventual return to the oval for the finish line.

“The oval is great because it’s the oval, but the feel of the race down at Jewtraw Park is great,” he said. “If the numbers start increasing too much, then we have to go back to the oval because with Jewtraw Park, we’re limited.”

Once racers leave Parkside Drive, they run up Main Street to Mirror Lake Drive, go clockwise around the lake to Parkside Drive, take a left to Morningside, run down state Route 73 to River Road, run down River Road to the turnaround, come back the same way and finish on Station Street. Those competing in the full marathon turn around near Station Street on the first loop and go back to River Road for the second loop before heading to the finish line at Jewtraw Park.

Athlete check-in and packet pickup will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at the Mirror Lake beach house on Parkside Drive.

This year, the Children’s Run returns for the first time since 2019. It will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the municipal beach.

The marathon and half marathon start at 8 a.m. Sunday, and the cutoff is 2 p.m. With a generous six hours to complete the course, the half marathon is a walker-friendly event.

The half marathon is open to anyone 13 years or older. Racers under age 18 must have a parent’s signature. The full marathon is open to anyone age 18 and older.

The 2022 Lake Placid Marathon is sanctioned and certified by USA Track & Field and is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Last year, 813 people finished the two races — 243 in the marathon and 570 in the half marathon. As of Monday, May 16, 850 people had registered, according to Borzilleri.

Participants are encouraged to park at the train station, which is closer to the finish line, if they can.

Road closures will be announced closer to the event. For more information, visit online at https://lakeplacidmarathon.com.
