New DMV office in Lake Placid opening June 3
LAKE PLACID — The Essex County Department of Motor Vehicles office in Elizabethtown will reopen to walk-ins starting next month, and the county’s new Lake Placid DMV office will open for the first time next week.
The Elizabethtown office has been open by appointment only for the past few months because of the coronavirus pandemic. The office is reopening to walk-ins starting June 9. Social distancing and face masks will be required.
The satellite DMV office in Lake Placid, located on the second floor of the North Elba Town Hall where a senior bingo program was once hosted, will open for the first time at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 3. The office was supposed to open in April 2020, but because of the pandemic and the temporary closure of the North Elba Town Hall last year, the opening was delayed, according to Essex County Clerk Joseph Provoncha.
Lake Placid’s DMV office will be open two days a week, Mondays and Thursdays.
There is already a nearby DMV office in Saranac Lake — which has been closed since March 2020 — but revenue generated at that office goes to Franklin County, not Essex County, which is why Provoncha wanted to open a location in Lake Placid. Essex County keeps 12.7 cents of every dollar residents spend on renewing their licenses and registration at DMV locations within the county. The county also collects a $25 execution fee on passports. Residents can go to either county’s DMV.
The North Elba Town Council authorized the county’s use of the town hall space in 2019.
The DMV office in Ticonderoga will also reopen for walk-ins next month.
