LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid Community Day, an annual event celebrating residents and local organizations, is slated to return this September.

Last year’s Community Day was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Because public health restrictions are always changing, it wasn’t clear if it would return this year — but Lake Placid Community Day Planning Committee Chair Valerie Rogers confirmed on Monday, April 19 that the event is on the books for Sunday, Sept. 12.

“Our plan is to hopefully hold Community Day as we have in the past,” she said. “We went with a date in September with the hope that things will be opened up enough by then.”

How much of the event will move forward, and what safety precautions will be required, will depend on what the public health guidance is at the time, Rogers said.

“We haven’t worked out all the details yet,” she said. “We’re just going to have to see how things develop as far as the guidelines and how many people are vaccinated and things like that.”

Usually, Community Day is held at the North Elba Show Grounds in the spring. Representatives from nonprofit organizations set up tables inside the main pavilion. With all the groups in one place, people can walk through and see what there is to do in the community. There’s also usually some type of picnic-style lunch, like hot dogs and hamburgers, and live music.

“The hope is that we’ll be good to go,” Rogers said. “That may be a little optimistic, but I think that’s what we need right now.”

With $5,000 in funding from the town’s Local Enhancement and Advancement Fund, secured with help from committee members Macie Huwiler and Danielle LaCavalla, the committee will be purchasing a new tent to house activities for children, according to Rogers.

The committee will be soliciting nominations for adult and teen volunteer of the year through July 15. Any organizations interested in tabling at Community Day can contact lakeplacidcommunityday@gmail.com.

Starting at $1.44/week.
