The three new cases at the Essex Center nursing home and rehabilitation facility announced Monday include two residents and one staff member.

Ninety-eight people associated with Essex Center — residents, staff and members of the community who’ve had contact with staff — have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past three weeks. Eight residents have died.

At least four members of the community who aren’t connected to the nursing home have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last three weeks, two of them residents of the town of North Elba.

The Essex County Health Department reported five active cases of COVID-19 countywide Tuesday evening. Four people remain hospitalized countywide.

Since this county announced its first confirmed case of COVID-19 in March, the Essex County Health Department has reported at least 181 positive cases of COVID-19. At least 16,065 COVID-19 diagnostic tests from Essex County have been processed since March.

Nearby Franklin County had one active case of COVID-19 as of Tuesday. Sept. 8. Franklin County has had one COVID-19 death, according to the state Department of Health, though the county’s Public Health department has disputed that and says there are none.

Statewide, there were five recorded COVID-19 fatalities and 557 new cases on Monday — bringing the total to 440,578 confirmed cases since March. The state’s infection rate was 0.96% on Monday. New York’s infection rate has remained below 1% for 32 days, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.
