Elizabethtown nursing home outbreak claims 4th resident

ELIZABETHTOWN — Another Essex Center resident has died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of fatalities at the Elizabethtown nursing home to four.

The Essex County Health Department announced the fatality on Tuesday evening. The department has declined to release names, ages or genders of those who test positive for — or die from — the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The department has cited the potential for that information to be “identifying” and thus a possible violation of federal medical privacy laws.

The latest fatality joins two others announced this past Thursday: one Essex County resident who had been hospitalized with COVID-19 since Aug. 17, and a Clinton County resident who was discharged from Essex Center on Aug. 17 to return home. The first fatality at Essex Center — and the first COVID-19 fatality in the county — was announced on Aug. 18.

The total number of positive cases connected to the outbreak at Essex Center rose to 62 on Tuesday. Of those, 28 are staff, 33 are nursing home residents, and one is a community member who came in contact with a staff member, according to the health department. Nursing home residents who test positive are being housed in a part of the facility reserved for COVID-19 patients.

Nursing home residents are among the highest-risk populations amid the coronavirus pandemic. As of Aug. 13, more than 402,000 people at some 17,000 facilities across the country have been infected by the coronavirus, the New York Times reported. At least 68,000 people have died as of Aug. 13, accounting for roughly 41% of total COVID-19 deaths in the United States.

There was one new case of COVID-19 in Essex County confirmed on Tuesday unrelated to the nursing home.

Altogether, there were 22 active cases of COVID-19 in Essex County as of Tuesday evening. Three people were hospitalized. The department didn’t release updated quarantine figures Tuesday, but it said Monday that at least 400 people were in precautionary quarantine countywide. Of those, 336 are travel-related and 64 are connected to the outbreak at Essex Center.

There were two COVID-19 fatalities and 629 new cases statewide on Monday, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office. As of Tuesday, there have been at least 435,495 cases and 32,495 fatalities in this state since the pandemic began, according to the New York Times.
