More than 100 people in Essex, Franklin have recovered after contracting COVID-19

SARANAC LAKE — More than 100 people in Essex and Franklin counties have reportedly recovered after contracting COVID-19.

The Essex County Health Department reported six active cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, May 5, putting the total number of cases at 33 test-confirmed and 16 suspected since the county’s first recorded case on March 18. Franklin County reported 27 active cases Tuesday, putting its total at 14 test-confirmed and 90 suspected since its first recorded case on March 24.

At least 31 Essex County residents have recovered from COVID-19 since March, according to the county Health Department. At least 77 people in Franklin County have recovered, according to Franklin County Public Health. These numbers may not be all-encompassing, however, since they only include cases reported to the health departments.

Zero Essex County residents were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Tuesday. Five of the active cases are in home isolation, and one is a prison inmate. Hospitalization data from Franklin County Public Health was not immediately available Tuesday afternoon, but more information was expected to be released on Wednesday.

At least 944 COVID-19 tests from the two counties had been processed as of Tuesday: 453 from Essex and 491 from Franklin.

As of Tuesday, the towns of North Elba and Ticonderoga were tied for the most test-confirmed and suspected COVID-19 cases in Essex County. Each town has had at least seven cases, and six people from each town are reported to have recovered.

As of April 30, the latest date for which Franklin County’s town-level data is available, Malone had the largest number of people in quarantine or with test-confirmed or suspected cases — the county did not break that total down — at 28.

Neither county has reported a death from COVID-19. Statewide, more than 19,600 people had died as of Monday.
