Whiteout leads to 4 North Country crashes

TUPPER LAKE – Whiteout conditions Friday caused crashes and traffic diversions as well as dangerous conditions for first responders, according to Mark Picerno of the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

“There’s two car accidents. It’s whiteout conditions. Demars Boulevard is closed down. Dogs and cats living together … things are going wrong,” Picerno said. “It’s just dangerous enough getting out there to the calls. And then directing traffic in whiteout conditions is probably one of the most dangerous things you ever have to do because nobody sees you.”

There were two crashes on state Route 30 in Tupper Lake near Trail’s End Tavern. One had an injury, but the injured person declined medical treatment or transport, according to Picerno.

Traffic there was reduced to one lane. Demars Boulevard has been shut down indefinitely since 2:30 p.m. with traffic control points, and traffic is being diverted through McLaughlin Avenue.

Picerno said the department has 13 members out in the village redirecting traffic and responding to vehicle crashes.

State Police said there was also one crash in North Hudson and another in Keene Friday, with no reported injuries.

Picerno said the National Weather Service predicts the snow band over Tupper Lake to last until around 6 p.m.
