SARANAC LAKE – The Adirondack Daily Enterprise Job Fair at North Country Community College Wednesday, April 25 appeared to confirm a shortage of willing and able workers in the area, as two dozen employers offering positions from landscaping to civil service jobs met with few applicants.

A representative of Elderwood at Uihlein said the job fair was “better than the one in Saratoga,” where she saw almost no applicants.

A group of students from the high school visited the job fair. According to employers, several students took information about or applied for temporary and summer jobs. The Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid garnered a few applicants, as did Bay Pond, a private preserve looking for people to do landscaping work.

Franklin County’s human resources department had brought listings of all the open civil service jobs for the county, as well as the dates of civil service tests. The personnel officer said she wasn’t actually handing out applications, which go through the state’s civil service process, but making information about the job openings available.

A representative of Adirondack Arc said the agency, which assists adults with disabilities, competes with state’s Sunmount facility for workers. “Sunmount pays better, but we have better benefits,” she said.

Starting at $1.44/week.
