‘Lake Placid’ screened tonight as ‘Dive-In Movie’

LAKE PLACID – It’s been 16 years since “Lake Placid” hit the big screen in this community, and one of the people responsible for its initial exhibition is bringing it back to the masses tonight, with a twist.

At 8 p.m. in Mid’s Park, provided the weather cooperates, WSLP will present a free screening of the campy horror film about a giant alligator in fictional Lake Placid, Maine. Called a “Dive-In Movie,” WSLP radio station Vice President Jim Williams hopes to see swimmers, boaters and tubers enjoying the waters of Mirror Lake while watching the film.

“Right in early July, I was on Facebook checking what we were doing for Fourth of July and making sure we were getting hits and all that kind of stuff,” he said. “I saw a picture of a gigantic movie screen and a bunch of people watching the movie ‘Jaws’ from a bunch of inner tubes, and I said, ‘Oh, this is just perfect – we’ve got to do this.’

“I contacted Eric Wilson at Good Guy Productions, and it turns out he does have a giant, inflatable movie screen and, obviously, sound system, and we decided we would set up the screen in Mid’s Park and invite people to come down with canoes and kayaks and inner tubes and watch the movie.”

Williams said the screen will be visible from the water and from land.

“It’s going to be right on the shore,” he said. “People can watch it from the park as well as the lake. So if you don’t have a floatie, you can still see the movie from the park, so you’ll be able to see it from either direction.”

Williams said he originally planned to show “Jaws” but ran into technical difficulties.

“The original plan was to show ‘Jaws’ because it is the 40th anniversary, but the movie company has removed ‘Jaws’ from general distribution because of the anniversary,” he said. “So we went back to ‘Lake Placid.'”

This is not the first time Williams is involved in bringing “Lake Placid” to Lake Placid.

“Sixteen years ago, July of 1999, Jon Lundin, who is now working for ORDA, and I realized that this movie called ‘Lake Placid’ was being debuted in July of 1999, but because Lake Placid is such a small community, they were not going to release it here,” he said. “Jon called the distribution company and said, ‘You’ve got to show ‘Lake Placid’ in Lake Placid,’ and he convinced them.

“Reg Clark (owner of the Palace Theatre) jumped on board, and we did a huge, big premiere party and did a post-premiere party over at what was then the Northwoods Inn and is now the Hotel North Woods. So it was 16 years ago that the movie ‘Lake Placid’ was first shown in Lake Placid, so, 16 years (later), another radio station is bringing it back.”

Williams said he has been doing his best to get the word out about the event.

“We’ve had it on the air,” he said. “We’ve had it on Facebook. It’s been shared a gajillion times. The first 100 people are going to get a Dive-In Movie T-shirt courtesy of Bear Essentials.

“It’s just a really fun way to use Mirror Lake in a completely different fashion than it’s ever been used before.”

Should it rain, Williams said the station has scheduled a rain date for Sunday at 8 p.m.

“We’re obviously watching the weather quite intently, and hopefully, the ghost of Kate Smith will shine on us as she does every Fourth of July,” he said. “We’ll probably make the call Friday afternoon, so people can check our Facebook page, or they can just tune in and we’ll let them know.”

Should the event prove successful, Williams said the station plans to screen other films.

“Next year, we’ll do ‘Jaws,’ assuming it’s available,” he said. “There are all kinds of water-themed movies out there, like ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ that we can show for years to come.

“The timing is perfect because we’re done with rugby and lacrosse and Ironman and all that kind of stuff. We deliberately picked this weekend because there wasn’t already 18 things going on at the same time.

“It’s a fun, campy cult movie kind of thing.”

Williams said several local businesses are sponsoring the show, including Bear Essentials Screen Printing and Embroidery, Adirondack Premier Properties, Mike Foote State Farm Insurance, Hannaford, Black Bear Restaurant, Generations Tap and Grill, Top of the Park and Fitness Revolution.

Starting at $1.44/week.
