Nationally famous Rusted Root to perform free concert in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID – People around the area are getting excited for the biggest name in this year’s the Pines Inn Songs at Mirror Lake concert series: Rusted Root.

The Pittsburgh-based band, best known for its mid-’90s hit “Send Me On My Way,” will grace the band shell at 7 p.m. tonight, July 9 at Mid’s Park.

Rusted Root has made eight albums and sold more than three million records worldwide since they formed two decades ago. Their music has been featured in films like “Ice Age,” “Twister” and “Matilda,” TV shows including “New Girl,” “Ally McBeal,” “Charmed” and “Chuck,” and a recent Enterprise Rent-A-Car commercial.

“Oh my goodness, we’re so excited to host them at the music series,” said Katie Million, Songs at Mirror Lake Music Series vice chairwoman. “Our committee has kind of a list of performers we would love to see at our series. Rusted Root has been on that list I think since the beginning, and we just finally made it work to get them in the schedule, and it worked with their schedule, and finally made it happen.”

Million has seen the band a number of times in the early ’90s, and she’s excited to see them play on Mirror Lake.

She said her committee is going to be on a heightened awareness for the show, and it’s bulking up on volunteers for the night. Organizers are also making everything happen a little earlier than normal to make sure things run smoothly, she said.

She said she expects to see a lot of people at the show, as long as the weather isn’t bad.

“Our crowd is always dependent on the weather,” Million said. “Hopefully the rain is out of its system and it will be beautiful every Tuesday night.”

Village police Sgt. Chuck Dobson said he is scheduling extra patrols that night due to the potential for large crowds.

“The event organizers originally told us between 900 and 1,000, but we’ll be prepared for more than that,” Dobson said.

Since he’s been on the force, probably 500 people have been the most he’s seen turn out to a show in the concert series.

Main Street above Mid’s Park is a state highway, so it can’t be closed down, Dobson said. He’ll have people directing traffic and making sure pedestrians are out of the road and safe. He said officers will also be on the lookout for open containers and parking issues, since parking is limited on Main Street.

It’s not just Tri-Lakers showing up for the show. Tupper Lake native Kelly Martin, who now lives in Plattsburgh, said she’s going to drive down for it.

“I’ve been wanting to see some shows this summer, so I figured it would be a good way to start off my summer concerts,” Martin said. “I’m actually pretty excited about it, because I haven’t seen them before.”

She listened to Rusted Root a lot earlier in their career, and she has been pulling out her old albums and checking out their new songs online since she heard about the show.

Starting at $1.44/week.
