Nominations now open for local Juneteenth award
AuSABLE CHASM — The North Star Underground Railroad Museum is asking people to nominate any individual, business, organization or politician who has made a positive impact on an African American community in the Adirondack-North Country region, and who actively advocates for the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion.
The North Country Juneteenth Colors of Freedom event celebrates the region’s role in the fight against slavery, including the Underground Railroad work and the area’s most avid abolitionist, John Brown. This year the event will be held again on June 17, 18, 19 and 20. To kick off the celebration on June 17, the North Country Juneteenth Colors of Freedom Community Award will be given to an individual, business, organization or politician.
This award is given on behalf of the Adirondack History Museum, Clinton County Historical Association, John Brown Farm, John Brown Lives, and the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association.
Juneteenth is now a national holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States, which for many in the African American communities meant freedom.
Nomination forms must be received by May 31. They can be found at https://northcountryundergroundrailroad.com/forms/web/community-award-statement-timeline-2023.pdf, at the North Star Underground Railroad Museum in AuSable Chasm and at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site in Lake Placid. Forms can be returned via mail, email, or dropped at the museums. For more information, contact Jackie Madison at ugr@frontier.com or 518-572-9552.
