High School Roundup: Bombers baseball advance to championship game

LAKE PLACID — Owen Lawrence rattled off two hits and five RBIs for the Lake Placid baseball team as the Blue Bombers secured an 11-3 road win on Tuesday, May 27 over the Bolton Eagles in the Section VII, Class D semifinals.

Lake Placid, which lost to the Eagles in last year’s title game, will compete for its second sectional title in three seasons. The Blue Bombers, which are the No. 3 seed, will take on the fifth-seeded Johnsburg/Minerva in the championship at Saranac Central High School at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31.

Jon Caito pitched five innings for Lake Placid and allowed two runs. Teammate Jarrett Mihill closed out the contest with back-to-back shutout innings to improve his team’s overall record to 10-4. The Blue Bombers finished the game with eight total hits as Lawrence and Vann Morrelli each had triples.

Bolton jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, however, Lake Placid tied the game with one run in the second, before adding four more in the third. The Blue Bombers then built an 11-1 lead, after scoring six more runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Abram Figueroa and Andy Morehouse had two hits each for Bolton, which finished with seven total hits. Jacob French added a double in the loss. The Eagles used three pitchers — Jaxon Egloff, Jace Hubert and Sully Eager — on Tuesday. Bolton finished the season with a 10-8-1 overall record.

Lake Placid 9, Crown Point 1

The Lake Placid baseball team used three pitchers Thursday, May 22 to combine for a one-hitter en route to a 9-1 victory over the Crown Point Panthers in the opening round of the Section VII, Class D playoffs.

The Blue Bombers’ Catio started on the mound and struck out three before Mihill entered in the third inning and recorded six strikeouts. Lawrence pitched in relief in the seventh and struck out one for Lake Placid, which improved to 9-4.

Mihill got the Blue Bombers on the board with a two-run single in the first inning. However, the Panthers responded in the second with one run to make the score 2-1.

After a scoreless third inning, Lake Placid connected on seven runs in the fourth, due in part to five hits from the team.

Mihill led the offense with three hits in his team’s 13-hit outing. Caito, Morrelli and Peyton Baillargeon each had two hits. Lawrence, Hyler Isham and Max Hyman added one hit each.

Crown Point’s Charles Williams had the lone hit for his team, while Owen Carey earned the pitching loss.

SOFTBALL

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid softball team’s season came to an end on Thursday, May 22 after falling 27-10 to the Johnsburg/Minerva Irish Jaguars in the Section VII, Class D quarterfinal round.

Hannah Sharp paced the Irish Jaguars offense with four hits, while Reagan Harris, Eloise Noel, Lucia Williams and Meaghan McKinney each had two. Lexi Sharp hit a home run in the third for her team, which had 16 total hits.

Michelle Ordway earned the pitching win for Johnsburg/Minerva, recording one strikeout, before Hannah Sharp entered in relief in the third inning and struck out five.

Willow Wood started for Lake Placid and finished with four strikeouts. Lili Draper pitched the final inning. The Blue Bombers struggled defensively with nine fielding errors.

However, offensively, Lake Placid was solid, recording 11 total hits. Brooke Meyer paced her team with three of those hits, while Wood and Margaret Thatcher each had two hits. The Blue Bombers’ Draper, Anisa Cecunjanin, Brooke Beaney and Kelsey McKillip had one hit each.

The Irish Jaguars got off to a hot start on Thursday, scoring eight runs in the first inning before scoring four more in the second and third to take a 12-0 lead.

Lake Placid scored nine straight runs in the bottom of the third inning to bring the game within three. However, Johnsburg/Minerva extended its lead with three runs in the fourth and 12 runs in the fifth to essentially seal the game.

The fifth-seeded Irish Jaguars were slated to take on the No. 1 seed, Crown Point Panthers, in the Section VII, Class D semifinal contest.

The Blue Bombers, which were the No. 4 seed in this sectional tournament, finished their season with a 5-10 overall record.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Lake Placid boys and girls track and field teams were swept by Saranac Lake at home on Thursday, May 22.

The Red Storm boys claimed a 98-28 victory over the Blue Bombers, while Saranac Lake’s girls earned a 109-23 victory after winning 12 events.

Aidan Fay and Jim Guglielmi were double winners for Lake Placid’s boys. Fay won the 3,200, while Guglielmi won the 400. They also ran legs on the winning 1,600 relay team, which also featured Jesse Carlson and Will Coffin.

The Red Storm boys won 13 events in their meet, as six different Saranac Lake track athletes won two events. Alden Cecunjanin won the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump, while Liam Nobles was victorious in the long jump and the 200.

Saranac Lake’s throwers won both the shot put and discus, as Sam Duprey won the shot and Dustin Burke claimed the discus. The Red Storm boys picked up wins in the 800 and 100, from Jake Kollmer and Austin Webb-Brown, respectively.

Webb-Brown also ran legs, alongside Cody Kollmer, Everest Wolford and Jeffrey Sears in the team’s 400-meter relay, which won in 51.75 seconds. Saranac Lake’s 3,200-meter relay team of Emmett VanBuskirk, Keaton Daley, Liam Fletcher and Colin Glascock was also victorious.

Fletcher and VanBuskirk each secured an individual event victory, as well. Fletcher won the triple jump, while VanBuskirk won the 400 hurdles. Teammate Alex Evans closed out the night by grabbing first in the 1,600.

Lake Placid’s girls won four events on May 22, with seventh-grader Leila Fey leading the way with three individual wins. Fey won the 400 and 1,500 events, while also running a leg in the 4×400 relay alongside Norah Francis, Ashe Gagnon and Jenna Fay. Francis was also a multi-event winner, securing first in the 3,000 event.

The Red Storm girls had strong performances from their seniors Maggie Reed and Addi Ash, who each capped off the night by winning three individual events.

Reed placed first in the 100-meter hurdles, the high jump and the triple jump, while Ash won the 200, 400 hurdles and ran a leg in the team’s 3,200 relay race, which also featured Maggie Reynolds, Pepper Laxson and Lena Holmes.

Reynolds picked up her second event victory after winning the 800. Meanwhile, Zuleyka Oliveras and Jovie Schenk were also double winners for the Red Storm. The duo ran a leg in the team’s 4×100 relay race — which also featured Raiana Baumann and Anika Wamsganz — before Oliveras won the long jump and Schenk won the 100-meter dash.

Saranac Lake rounded out the night by sweeping the throws, with Gracen Foster winning the shot put and Brook Burke claiming the discus.

Up next, the area track and field teams will compete in the Section VII championships at Peru High School at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 1. Following that, the team will take part in the state qualifier meet on Friday, June 6, at Moriah High School.
