LAKE PLACID — After starting the season with four straight losses, the Lake Placid boys basketball team has found a bit of a groove heading into the winter break.

Playing at home on Dec. 21, the Blue Bombers picked up their second win in the last three games, by topping the Wells Indians 59-40. The team previously beat Johnsburg/Minerva 51-35 on Dec. 12 and fell to Bolton 59-21 on Dec. 19.

Talon Jordon, a junior, paced Lake Placid with a double-double. Jordon finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Seb Cecunjanin also had an outstanding performance in the win while scoring a game-high 25 points and senior Foster Wood added eight points.

The Blue Bombers built a double-digit lead early in the first quarter and held on for the remainder of the contest. Lake Placid took an 18-4 advantage in the first quarter, thanks in part to its inside game from forwards’ Jordon and Wood, who combined for 10 points. Cecunjanin, a guard, also came up big during that stretch, scoring seven points.

“We went in there knowing our bigs could control things if they wanted and in the first period they did,” Blue Bombers head coach Brian Brandes said.

Backed by a nine-point second-quarter performance from Jordon, Lake Placid extended its lead to 33-13 heading into intermission. However, the team got off to a slow start in the third quarter, with Wells outscoring the Blue Bombers 18-14.

The Indians’ leading scorer, Chase Brooks, who had scored just four points in the first half, recorded eight points, which included two three-pointers during the third period.

In the fourth quarter, Lake Placid picked up where it left off, defensively, and prevented Brooks from scoring for the remainder of the game.

“We knew that we had to shut down Chase Brooks,” Brandes said. “Last game that I saw him he had 24 points. We had to shut him down and we held him. Our defense did a nice job and it was everybody — the guys that came off the bench played hard.”

Defensively, the Blue Bombers were solid. The team came away with 15 steals. Cecunjanin had a team-high eight steals, while Caleb Wylie had three.

Wells was led by Brooks and Hunter Passmore. The duo scored 12 points each, with most of their points coming in the second half. Kevyn Simmons was solid as well, scoring six points.

Following the winter break, the Blue Bombers will return to their home court on Jan. 4. The team will take on Crown Point at 6:30 p.m.
