High School Roundup: Bombers baseball extends win streak

LAKE PLACID — PJ Colby threw 15 strikeouts and the Lake Placid varsity baseball team won their fifth straight game, edging out the Crown Point Panthers 4-3 at home on May 10.

Colby, a junior southpaw, pitched a complete game while giving up just five hits and three walks. The Panthers’ Noah Spaulding pitched five innings and struck out 12 batters.

“It was a great baseball game,” the Blue Bombers’ head coach, Brian Brandes, said in a statement. “Both pitchers were doing their part.”

The red hot Lake Placid batters jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning but were quickly cooled down. Through the next three innings, Spaulding held the Blue Bombers scoreless.

While up 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Lake Placid’s Jarrett Mihill scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead.

In the final inning, Crown Point scored one run when Joe Tompkins hit an RBI single. Colby came back to strike out the final two batters to seal the win for the Bombers.

Lake Placid, now 7-3 on the season.

Lake Placid 6

The Lake Placid softball team had a rough outing on May 10, falling to Crown Point 32-6.

Trailing 15-1, the Blue Bombers knocked in four runs in the third inning, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Panthers.

Emma Adragna went two-for-three from the plate with two singles to lead Lake Placid offensively. The team had a combined four hits.

Crown Point’s Kaitlin Ross was solid all around. Ross hit a grand slam while going two-for-three from the plate. She also earned the win on the mound, striking out 10 batters.

Lake Placid falls to 3-4 on the season.

The Lake Placid boys and girls tennis teams fell to the Plattsburgh Hornets on May 5. The Blue Bomber boys had the better outing with a 3-2 loss, while the girls were defeated 5-0 at home on Thursday.

Lake Placid’s two wins came from the boys’ doubles teams. Harrison and Nash Carlisto defeated the Hornets Ben Lambert and Simon Meyer, 6-3, 6-4 and Owen Keal and Parker Scanio topped Joel Avos and Jacques Gervich, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The Blue Bombers’ top singles player, Sonja Toishi was narrowly edged out in her match. Toishi lost to Sebastien Bonnabase, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Lake Placid’s Tristan Spotts was defeated by Andrew Bula, 6-1, 6-3, while the Blue Bomber’s third singles player Kenny Lawless fell to Nick Bula 6-0, 6-0.

The closest match on the girls’ side came from their top singles player Reagan Levitt who was ultimately topped by Tessa Bonnabase, 6-3, 6-4.

Lake Placid’s Elsie Fitzsimmons fell in her singles match to Olivia Nowosielski, 6-0, 6-1 and Melanie Megliore lost to the Hornets’ Rebecca Coursen, 6-1, 6-2.

The Blue Bombers’ number one doubles team of Grace Ericson and Julia Crawford were defeated 6-1, 6-0. The second doubles team of Madison Tyler and Bailey Smith fell 6-2, 6-1 in their match.

Lake Placid’s girls coach Jon Fremante said Thursday’s match had great play from both sides with long rallies and a good number of deuces games.

TRACK

After both Lake Placid track and field teams fell to to Saranac Lake on May 3, the two squads suffered a loss to the Peru Central Nighthawks at home on May 5. The boys were defeated 95-35, while the Blue Bomber girls fell 95-36.

On the girls’ side, Ellen Lansing was a double winner. She won both the long jump and the triple jump.

The Blue Bombers’ other two wins came from Sam Damico and Clara Boutelle. Damico won the 1,600-meter event, while Boutelle won the 100-meter dash.

The Lake Placid boys had three individual winners on Thursday. Will Douglas won the 400-meter event, Jesse Marshall won the long jump and Landon Lopez won the high jump.

SLP 13, Ogdensburg 10

The Saranac Lake Placid lacrosse team picked up their second win in a row on May 9, edging out the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils 13-10 at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake.

SLP was able to move the ball around by connecting on their passes and picking up the loose balls, which helped settle their offense down.

Ladue was the driving force yet again for SLP. Ladue rifled in seven goals and earned one assist. Phoebe Peer scored three goals and Sydney Dann scored one goal while adding five assists.

Lily Fisher and Addison Dann had stand-out performances. The pair had one goal and one assist each.

Senior Emma Wood stopped seven shots in net to earn the win.

Following the win, the girls move to 3-5 on the season.

SLP 13, Ogdensburg 10

The Saranac Lake Placid varsity lacrosse team defeated Heuvelton Central 14-7 at home on May 5.

SLP had a slow start to the game, but picked up their offense and came together to pull away in the second half.

Peer paced SLP with a team-high four goals. Peer also recorded three assists on Saturday. Ladue and Kaitlyn Yando both recorded a hat trick. Ladue led the team with four assists.

SLP’s Addison and Syndey Dann netted two goals each. Syndey Dann also contributed with one assist and Fisher picked up one assist.

Wood had a solid game in net for SLP. Wood recorded eight saves in the win.
