High School Roundup: Bombers golf top Red Storm

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid golf team was dominant in their first match of the season, topping Saranac Lake, 6-0 at the Craig Wood Golf Course on April 29.

Playing in Lake Placid’s top position, Brady Tremblay, a junior, earned a 2-over par 37 in his contest against Noah Jewtraw, who recorded a 50 — the lowest round for the Red Storm.

Chris Byrne had the second-lowest round of the match with a 40 for the Blue Bombers. Byrne defeated Saranac Lake’s David Rascoe, who shot a 61 in the third pairing.

Lake Placid’s Jack Armstrong, Grady Draper and Alex Wright shot rounds in the 40s to win their respective matches.

Cooper Patnode had the second-lowest round with a 58 for the Red Storm, but was ultimately defeated by Wright. The Blue Bombers’ Tanner Foley shot a 59 to seal the win over Ben Laba, who shot a 74.

BASEBALL

Lake Placid 17, Boquet Valley 6

The Lake Placid baseball team recorded their second win in a row, topping the Boquet Valley Griffins 17-6 at home on April 29.

The Blue Bombers had the bats rolling early, scoring nine total runs in the first three innings while giving up just one run.

With Lake Placid up 9-1 in the top of the fifth inning, the Griffins scored five times on six hits to bring the game within three runs. The Bombers then answered with eight runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to pull away.

Lake Placid was led by Jon Caito, PJ Colby and Foster Wood, who recorded three hits each. Seniors JJ Ledwith and Sam Hooker also had a solid night offensively for the Blue Bombers. The pair had two hits each, including a double from both batters. The team finished the game with 15 hits.

Colby started the game on the mound and struck out eight batters. Lake Placid’s Katie Coursen came in during the fifth inning in relief to close out the game.

Lake Placid 17, Wells 2

Everything seemed to be clicking for the Lake Placid varsity baseball at home on May 3. The Blue Bombers recorded 17 hits en route to a 17-2 victory over Wells Central.

Ledwith and Caito each had three hits to lead Lake Placid offensively. Coursen, Wood, Jarrett Mihill and Vann Morelli record two hits each for the Blue Bombers. Ledwith, Caito and Mihill each had a double, while Morelli rattled off a triple in the win.

Lake Placid’s Hyman pitched three innings to earn the win. Morelli, Mihill, Ledwith and Caito came in to pitch on Tuesday.

The Blue Bombers, now 3-3 on the season, are slated to host Chazy on May 5.

SOFTBALL

Boquet Valley 12, Lake Placid 4

The Lake Placid softball team had the bats rolling late, but it wasn’t enough to take down the Boquet Valley Griffins, falling 12-4 at home on April 29.

Trailing 10-1, the Blue Bombers responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to tack any more on the rest of the way.

Lake Placid got a stellar performance at the plate from Hailey Buysse who went 2-for-4, with two singles. Senior Emma Adragna had a triple for the Blue Bombers.

Lake Placid’s Brooklyn Huffman struck out eight batters in five innings, while Danaya Patterson came in during the sixth inning and had three strikeouts.

Lake Placid 17, Wells 5

The Lake Placid varsity softball team had the bats rolling early and never looked back, securing a 17-5 win over the Wells Central on May 3.

The Blue Bombers posted nine runs in the first two innings to take a 9-0 advantage. Wells scored four runs in the third inning to bring the game within five. In the final three innings, Lake Placid tacked on right runs to seal the game.

The Blue Bombers were led by Chelsea Moore and Megan Quinn. Moore went four-for-five from the plate, which included one double, while Quinn went five-for-five, with one double. Adragna had two hits — both of which were doubles — and Dari Patterson had two singles. Lake Placid combined for 17 hits on Tuesday.

Huffman started the game on the mound for the Blue Bombers and pitched six innings. Huffman struck out seven batters while allowing just three walks. Adragna came in the seventh inning and struck out two batters.

With the win, Lake Placid moves to 2-2 on the season. The Blue Bombers were scheduled to host Chazy on May 5.
